The surf school sits on a beautiful and protected 2 km beach in the relaxing fishing village of Busua. The village located in the Western Region of Ghana, 36 km west of the city of Takoradi and 250 km west of the capital city of Accra. Busua is a small fishing village of 2000 inhabitants and during your stay you will experience the traditional way of life in a coastal Ghanaian settlement. Early in the morning the fishing boats are pulled into the sea accompanied by rhythmic chants that have echoed over the beach for centuries. When the boats return from the sea they bring with them catches of tuna, swordfish, dorado and lobsters. Women and children will gather around and bring their purchase home for dinner – elegantly balancing it in large trays on their head.
In the evenings you will experience the influence of the younger generation when colourful lights come on and Azonto beats are coming through the speakers. One of the most common ways to spend the evenings are on the beach in front of the bonfire where you can enjoy drumming, reggae rhythms or join in on learning to move Azonto style! The locals are welcoming to new visitors, if you take your time to greet people you are sure to have a smile and a greeting back. If you stop for a chat, or memorise some phrases of the local language, you may even end up with new friends! Busua has only one paved road, frequent power cuts and more goats than cars in the streets; truly an “off the beaten path” destination. Nevertheless, it makes for a relaxing holiday as many places have a generator and visitors can enjoy conveniences and the comforts of wi-fi, a/c and hot water.
In Busua we offer you accommodation in two ways:
1. Ghana Surf Hostel
The hostel is located at the very beginning of the beach section. If you cross the small river estuary (knee deep) in front of the surf hostel, you will find yourself in the midst of archaic fishing boats and in about a minute you are in the "center" and at the Beach Break.
The single and double rooms have a private bathroom with shower, toilet and a fan.
The dorm rooms can accommodate up to 8 people and has a shared bathroom with shower, toilet and fan.
The kitchen is available for all guests. Water and other drinks can be found in the refrigerator, which is free to use. You just pay the stuff you took easily before you leave.
The surf hostel offers the perfect accommodation to get in touch with other travelers, development workers and locals. So you can share your experiences with anothers, find or give valuable tips and make new friends. The paradisiacal garden with its palm trees, the sandy soil, hammocks, slackline and a cozy little bar also invites you to cozy evenings in company. Parties with african music, reggae and european hits are also a good way to end the day. The hostel has a generator.
The spacious terrace with view on Busua Beach is the ideal place to start in the day with a delicious breakfast.
The Southern Hemisphere swells that hit the Western coastline of Ghana travel great distances to reach our beaches producing some of the cleanest, most orderly waves on earth. As Ghana is not yet a surfing destination it is marked by hundreds of yet-to-be discovered beach breaks, reef breaks and point-breaks. It is the point-breaks, with a variety of left handers and rights being able to ride one point break wave all the way to the shore with uncrowded waters that makes Ghana a highly desirable surf adventure destination.
The combination of perfect waves, warm water and no crowds, as well as the incredible and limitless experiences of getting off the beaten path and traveling up the coast in a traditional fishing boat, creates the ideal African surf adventure!
