Matanzas is an authentic fishermen's village located on the Chilean coast, about 160 kilometers away from the capital Santiago. Surrounded by different wave spots and spectacular nature, the village is a perfect base for wave kiters. Thanks to countless wavespots along the 4000 kilometer Pacific coast line-ups are hardly ever crowded - lots of waves for few kiters! Storms from the Antarctica are Chile's wave machine - they are constantly hitting the coast. Together with strong SW winds they create perfect wave kite conditions - especially from October to December. Besides the wave spots there are two flatwater spots closeby suited for beginners.
The hostel lies at the beachfront in the center of Matanzas. Generous common areas and modern, plain designed 2- and 4-bed rooms build the perfect base for kite holidays. Breakfast, dinner and transfer from/to Santiago is included. During the main season (January to February) it can get busy while Chilean people are on vacation, troughout the rest of the year the village is calm and offers a lot of space on the beach and the waves. Along the coast there are many unkwown kite- and world-famous surf-spots, as for example Puertecillo (approx. 20 kilometer) and Punta de Lobos (approx. 100 kilometer).
Matanzas is surrounded by several top kite spots. Our guides know the preffered wind and wave conditions for the different spots. At the beachfront of the village breaks a left-hand wave (beach break), thermal winds start early afternoon allowing advanced kite- and wind surfers long sessions until sunset (confident launching and landing skills required). The best wave kite spot in the area for confident kiters due to constant winds, clean wave conditions and stunning surroundings is located 2 kilometer north, access only along the beach (4-wheel drive, 20 minutes walking or downwinder). Open sea, a small lagoon and a generous beach are the three ingredients for the good beginner and advanced spot Pupuya, 2 kilometer south of Matanzas. Knee deep water level in the lagoon allows beginners to make their first steps while more advanced kiters can enjoy the waves in the open sea. Good freestyle conditions when waves are small. Flat water conditions can be found at the rivermouth of Rio Rapel in La Boca (approx. 8 kilometers north of Matanzas), in combination with constant wind good conditions for beginners.
Chile offers perfect topographical conditions for wind and waves: Given a stable Pacific anti-cyclone, the dry interior lands and the hot desert suck the cold ocean air from the cold pacific Humboldt Current all the way up Chile's coast, creating strong southerly winds. On sunny days, the wind starts turning SW on early afternoon creating perfect side-onshore conditions, mostly between 20-25, sometimes up to 35 knots. Those effects are unreliable during the Chilean winter (June-August) but start building up again during September and peak in November and December, the months with the best wind statistics.
The Humboldt Current constantly delivers S-SW swells from the Antarctica to the Chilean coast, producing awesome wave conditions. Due to the swell direction mostly left-handers. Whereas temperatures are already hot in central Chile during the southamerican spring (September-November) and summer (December-February), it can still be chilly at the coast requiring a sweater or windbreaker especially during spring. Wind-protected areas allow sun bathing nonetheless. The Polar-influenced water from the Humboldt Current makes a wetsuit inevitable all year long. But the cold water (16-18°C) brings to huge advantages: It creates a reliable wind system in combination with the warm inlands and scares off toe dippers - more space on the wave for anyone who doesn't mind the refreshing temparatures.
