To help you prepare for your surf trip in the best possible way and to avoid unpleasant surprises on site, we have put together a detailed packing list for your surf trip. As the required equipment and clothing depends on the destination and the booked arrangement, we have compiled individual packing lists for different categories. After all, packing for an Indo Boat Trip is very different from packing for a cold water surf trip in Ireland. But one basic rule applies to all surf trips: Travel light & clever! This not only relieves your back, but also your wallet, depending on the luggage regulations. It also helps you to prevent your “inner gadget freak”, who would like to pack up even the most useless utensils, only to unpack them again (usually unused..) after the trip.

1. SURF TRIP PACKING LIST | Warm water

Surfer from Symbiosis Surfcamp Lombok

For a stay in a warm water destination such as Indonesia, Sri Lanka, Philippines, Maldives, Costa Rica, Nicaragua or Hawaii you need above all a good sun protection! And thanks to light clothes (boardshorts & bikini) you can get along with little luggage.

  • Surf Bikini / Boardshorts
  • Rash Guard / Lycra
  • Surfleggins for ladies
  • Surf poncho
  • Waterproof sunscreen SPF 30+ & SPF 50+
  • Zinc Stick for destinations with strong sunlight
  • Sun hat / cap (waterproof surf caps are also available for ideal sun protection while surfing)
  • Sunglasses
  • Appropriate clothing & shoes
  • Sandals / Flip Flops
  • Mosquito repellent
  • Reusable drinking bottle
  • Travel documents (passport, flight ticket, international driving licence if required)

2. SURF TRIP PACKING LIST | Cold water

For surfing in a cold water destination such as Portugal, Canary Islands, Morocco, Spain, South Africa, California, Peru or Ireland, you usually need a wetsuit. In our packages the wetsuits are available in the appropriate thickness and in different sizes, but you are always welcome to bring your own. Depending on the destination & season the requirements for the wetsuit vary and not every cold water destination is really “cold”: Often you can chill out on the beach comfortably in a bikini and board shorts, while you just need a wetsuit for the cooler water and especially for longer surf sessions. A good sun protection should never be forgotten at these destinations, too, as the strength of the sun is often deceptive, as you don’t feel the radiation immediately due to the cold water.

  • Surf Bikini / Boardshorts
  • Wetsuit (if you prefer your own)
  • Booties / gloves (only for destinations with very cold water)
  • Surf poncho
  • Waterproof sunscreen SPF 30+ & SPF 50+
  • Sunglasses
  • Appropriate clothing & shoes
  • Sandals / Flip Flops
  • Reusable drinking bottle
  • Travel documents (passport, flight ticket, possibly driving licence)
  • Visa, vaccination card (if necessary)
  • Money (EC- / credit card, cash)
  • Toilet bags / cosmetics
  • Electronics (e.g. chargers, headphones, adapters)

3. PACKING LIST | SURF BOAT TRIP

A Surf Boat Trip is the ultimate dream for all surfers who already have some experience and want to surf really intensively at paradise spots. A boat offers only limited space for luggage, so the rule “travel light” applies even more. But that’s no problem at all, after all you’re mainly in bikinis & shorts anyway! Since you are on the water all the time during a boat trip, a good sun protection is VERY important (including zinc). You always have to bring your own surf equipment and we recommend a second surfboard, either as a replacement or as a supplement (e.g. Step up, Twin Fin) to the standard shortboard.

  • Surf Bikini / Boardshorts
  • Rash Guard / Lycra
  • Surfleggins for ladies
  • Surf poncho
  • Waterproof sunscreen SPF 30+ & SPF 50+
  • Zinc Stick / Cream
  • Sun hat / cap (e.g. waterproof surf cap)
  • Sunglasses
  • Appropriate clothing & shoes
  • Sandals / Flip Flops
  • Mosquito repellent (for island visits, not necessary on the boat)
  • Reusable drinking bottle
  • Travel documents (passport, flight ticket, possibly driving licence)
  • Visa, vaccination card (if necessary)
  • Money (EC- / credit card, cash)
  • toilet bags / cosmetics
  • Electronics (e.g. chargers, headphones, adapters)
  • Medication / small medicament (e.g. plasters, painkillers, medicine against seasickness)
  • Drybag
  • earplugs (keyword “surfers ear”)
  • Board games / Cards
  • Books / Ebook-Reader
  • Camera (Smartphone if necessary)
  • Gopro / Surfuhr
  • Duct Tape (for rough repairs)
  • Headlamp
  • Fishing equipment
  • Own surfboard & accessories (see point 4)
  • A second surfboard recommended (as replacement or addition)

4. TRAVELING WITH YOUR OWN SURF EQUIPMENT

If you have booked a surf course package with us, you do not need to bring your own surfboard. All our partners are equipped with the appropriate material and especially at the beginning it is recommended to start with the appropriate beginner boards and to take the opportunity to try out different sizes and shapes.

More experienced surfers can of course arrive with their own equipment, especially for surf guiding packages this is recommended and for special trips such as our boat trips or Angola road trips even mandatory. But many destinations also offer suitable surfboards for experienced surfers, so that you can save transport and other additional costs (Airline fees). However, it is important to check the availability of the desired board early.

  • Surfboard incl. Pad & Leash
  • Fins & Fin key
  • Surfboardbag / board sock
  • Surf wax
  • Repair kit for smaller dings
  • Reef booties (depending on the destination and spots)

5. NICE TO HAVE

As mentioned in the beginning, you should limit yourself to the important things when packing and not be tempted to carry unnecessary equipment. But of course there are some utensils that are not essential for survival, but which can be very useful and helpful during a surf trip.

Chilling and reading by the pool
  • A good book (or eReader)
  • A book with reference to the travel destination
  • Ikea bag or something similar (e.g. practical for wet stuff & wetsuits when travelling with a rental car)
  • Drybag
  • earplugs (keyword “surfers ear”)
  • Small plastic bag (practical to slip into wet wetsuits)
  • Passport photos (if you need a photo for a document or similar on site)
  • All important documents such as passport, travel insurance, vaccination card (if necessary) can be stored digitally and also printed out and carried separately
  • International driving licence (if required)
  • Keypod for car keys (handy if you go surfing by rental car)
  • Board games / Cards
  • Soft Racks (for smaller rental cars, taxis)
  • Gopro / Surf watch
  • Yoga mat (can be used as protection when travelling with a board bag)
  • Rain protection / Windstopper
  • Camera (or just the smartphone)
  • Tablet or similar (although we rather recommend digital detox!)
  • Mosquito net (if necessary)
  • Duct Tape for rough repairs
  • Painkillers, plasters, etc. for minor surfing injuries
  • Mouth and nose mask (compulsory for all airlines due to Covid-19, in addition a mask is also compulsory for shops, supermarkets etc. at many destinations)
