Overview

The archipelago includes the two inhabited islands of Madeira and Porto Santo and the uninhabited rocky islands of Ilhas Desertas and Ilhas Selvagens. Like the Azores and Canary Islands, this archipelago is of volcanic origin. Madeira is located about 500 kilometres from the coast of Africa and about 450 kilometres northwest of the Canary Islands. Madeira has an area of 741 square kilometres – 57 kilometres long and 22 kilometres wide. The highest point of the island is the Pico Ruivo de Santana with 1.862 meters above sea level.
If there are no waves, there are enough other activities to enjoy life on the island. Besides a distinctive underwater world for diving, there are also a lot of mountains for climbing, mountain biking or paragliding. A hiking tour along the “Levadas” (small, artificial irrigation channels) that run through the whole island is also highly recommended.

4 REASONS FOR A SUDDEN RUSH SURF TRIP TO MADEIRA:

  1. Unique island with many facets and culinary diversity
  2. World class surf spots for experienced surfers, but also safe surf beaches for beginners
  3. Countless possibilities for activities and excursions, the island invites you to discover
  4. Local camp management with great know-how (the camp leader is a legendary big wave surfer)

Surf

Due to its location, almost every swell from the North Atlantic reaches the coast of Madeira, but this does not mean that every swell in Madeira is surfable. Due to the rocky steeply sloping ground, there is at least one swell of about 1.5 meters necessary. If you want to surf Madeira, you have to have a little experience. The waves partly break very close to the rocks and also the entry and exit is often not without danger, as the water masses can easily wash you onto the rocks.

May to September is a time with very few to no waves, the rest of the time is quite constant, but not as constant as the Portuguese coast or the Canary Islands. Even in winter there can be periods without waves or it can be very stormy and the waves are too big and chaotic for surfing. Thus, you have to catch the right time, if you succeed in doing so, then you will have absolutely brilliant surf sessions. Even beginners can learn to surf at suitable spots.

Our surf school is located in Porto da Cruz, at Alagoa Beach. This beach offers top conditions for beginners: beach break (sand) and only 20 minutes from the surf house.

For advanced surfers, the reef spots Jardim do Mar, Paul do Mar and Ponta Pequea offer ideal conditions, also only 20 minutes away.
For advanced surfers the reef spots Jardim do Mar, Paul do Mar and Ponta Pequeña Faja Da Areja (right hander), Contreiras and Ribeira da Janela (both lefts) within 20 minutes.
